JUNIOR MARKSMANSHIP TEAMS

-     RIFLE     -      PISTOL     -     SHOTGUN

Shelby County Shooting Sports competitive rifle and pistol teams offer youths ages 9-20 an opportunity to learn gun safety as well as develop their marksmanship skills.

Rifle teams are part of the Alabama 4H Natural Resources program.  We have teams which actively train and compete in BB gun, Sporter Air Rifle, Precision Air Rifle, Smallbore (.22's) and Hi-power.  Air gun teams such as BB and air rifle practice and compete year round.  Practice is generally available on Monday and Thursday evenings at the Lakeshore Foundation indoor air gun range.  Smallbore and Hi-power programs are during the warmer months of the year.  Since all rifle shooting is essentially the same, a team member may participate in as many of our rifle teams as time allows.

The air pistol team practices with the rifle team.  The program is a USA Shooting Progressive Position Pistol (PPP) program which is designed to allow younger shooters to practice and compete in supported positions while they are building their marksmanship skills.

We also have students who participate shotgun shooting in a youth scholastic trap program.  This meets at Magic City Gun Club in Pinson, AL.  The team meets two Saturdays a month for practice and competes is various trap shooting competitions.

To join our team, students must complete a formal gun safety program such as the NRA / 4H (click here to find an NRA course near you) programs we offer or an equivalent program such as the BSA Rifle merit badge or Venture Crew Shooting Sports elective.  We provide everything the student needs to participate in a beginning NRA / 4H course.  Equipment is also availalbe so that new shooters may participate in the sport with a minimal investment in equipment.  As students see where their interest lies they will want to aquire their own equipment when they can.
