Whether you are interested in recreational shooting, competition, hunting, gun collecting, historical reenactment, home safety or personal protection—the basics are where to start! NRA Basic Firearm Training Courses teach you the principles of safe handling and shooting which help you develop the knowledge, skills and attitude for the safe and legal use of firearms. Shelby County Shooting Sports is part of a network of NRA Certified Instructors throughout the United States providing a public service by conduction NRA Basic and FIRST Steps Firearm Training Courses. Courses are offered in the following disciplines:

What will you learn in an NRA Basic Course?
NRA basic courses provide hands-on learning opportunities in the following areas:
- firearm handling and shooting safety
- firearm parts and their operation
- ammunition and its function
- shooting fundamentals and an opportunity to develop them on the range
- how to select, clean and store a firearm
- review of various activities available to help participants develop their shooting skills
NRA FIRST Steps Program
FIRST Steps (Firearm Instruction, Responsibility and Safety Training) is an NRA training program for new shooters. It provides a hands-on orientation to one specific rifle, pistol, or shotgun model in as little as three hours, including a one-hour shooting session on a range.
NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home
The NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense. This is an eight-hour course. Students should expect to shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition. Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Homehandbook, NRA Gun Safety Rulesbrochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet and a course completion certificate.
The NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course participants must be law abiding, adults, and experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm) to maximize what can be learned from this course. Proof of shooting experience can be one of the following: NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing the Pre-Course Assessment.
