2023 Dixie Challenge BB and Smallbore
Below are the entry forms for the Dixie Challenge BB and Smallbore matches, please fill them out and follow the directions for turning them in.
It's almost time for the Youth Basic Rifle Course that you or your child is registered for. Here are a few details.
NOTE: The class is full and there is a waiting list. If for some reason the student can not attend please let me know as soon as possible so we can let the next person on the waiting list into the class.
1. The range is indoors so except for tornados weather won't affect the class. The facility is heated but not not air-conditioned. It is located behind my house at:
574 Elvira Rd Helena, AL 35080
2. The first class will meet on Saturday, September 10. We will meet 8 AM to Noon on 9/10, 9/17, & 9/24.
3. This class is an NRA Basic Rifle class and Alabama 4-H program. We will need to get all students registered with 4-H. Parents (or students) may go online before class day and sign up with 4-H. The website is https://v2.4honline.com/ . If not registered with 4H prior to the first class then we will need a parent to do this at the beginning of the first class. We will have a computer available and someone there to help. The site can be a bit cumbersome.
4. Cost for the course is $70 per student payable to SCSSA at the first class.
5. We provide everything needed for the course except paper and pen for taking notes. Please do NOT bring any firearms, airguns, airsoft guns, or ammunition of any kind to class unless asked to do so by the instructor(s).
6. This course is a hands-on program. We will have classroom time and live fire each session. The course covers rifle safety and use for target shooting. All common rifle types & ammunition will be covered. Live fire during the first two sessions will be using air guns (target air rifles or target BB guns). These guns fit children better and offer low noise and recoil for beginning shooters. The 3rd session we will be shooting 22 caliber rifles.
7. Students should dress for the weather with clothing suitable for rifle shooting activities. We will be shooting benchrest, prone, and standing. Clothing should be comfortable and suitable for getting into the various shooting positions. We suggest loose fitting long pants and t'shirts. When we shoot cartridge firearms (3rd session) long pants, shirts with sleeves preferably collarless are REQUIRED. Close toed shoes are required at all times in the range. Fired brass is hot and stepping on brass is almost as bad as legos but sharper.
8. Parents are needed the first session to get signed up for 4-H (unless done prior). After that, parents are not required to stay, however, it is common for parents to sit in the back and listen in. You never know, you might learn something new. We do ask that parents leave the classroom tables & seats for the students.
9. During live fire exercises, parents are welcome to go to the firing line with their child. If you do so we ask that you stand directly behind your child and within arms reach. If the student turns around you should be able to control any errant muzzle. Please make room for our instructors and coaches. Parents not specifically on the line with their child will need to stay behind the READY LINE.
10. Each lesson we cover builds on previous lessons. Please make a strong effort to have students at each class. If something comes up and the student must miss a class after the first one, please contact me to discuss what needs to be done and/or schedule a make-up session. Our goal is for students to have a good time and accomplish the learning objectives of the course.
11. This course meets and exceeds the shooting requirements for the Scouts BSA Rifle Merit Badge requirements. If a student is a scout please let us know. There are a few things we need to discuss with them. We also ask that the scout discuss the class with their Scoutmaster and obtain a signed "Blue Card". They should bring the card with them to the last class.
12. If you have questions regarding the class you may reach me at this email address. Currently my phone number is 205-997-8336.
We are looking forward to another great class.
Sincerely,
Sam Richardson

NRA / USAS Level 1 Rifle Coach Course
It's almost time for our NRA/USAS Level 1 Rifle Coach course at SCSSA. Here are a few details for the upcoming course.
Shelby County Shooting Sports Association is the host and sponsor for the class. Lisa Kelley will be our instructor.
- Location: 574 Elvira Rd
Helena, AL 35080
- Date: Saturday, March 19 & Sunday, March 20
- Time: 8 AM to 5 PM each day
Lunch will be provided each day. Drinks and snacks will be available at the range.
The range is indoors. We have heat, but, only fans for cooling. Please dress appropriately for whatever Alabama has in store for us those days. Clothing should also be comfortable and appropriate for getting into the shooting positions. All equipment and course materials will be provided. You should bring pen and paper for taking notes. Directions: It is recommended to come from I-459 at exit 6 or from Helena. Either way, you will need to come down Hwy 52 / Morgan Rd via exit 6 or through Helena. If your GPS directs you through Hoover, Trace Crossings, or Hwy 150 - DO NOT GO THAT WAY. Part of that route is now a gated neighborhood and part of the road is a LAKE.
If you need to get a hotel, there are hotels nearby on Hwy 150 in Hoover and Hwy 119 in Pelham, AL. I recommend Hwy 119 area because any hotel there should be good and the route to the range is good.
We are looking forward to a great class. Please let me know if you have any questions or need any special arrangements.
Sincerely,
Sam Richardson
